  • Frederick Upham was the son of Mr Frederick Edwin Upham and Mrs. E. Upham (now Mrs. Gore), of 162 Tasman St., Wellington, New Zealand. Served in Samoa in 1914.

    Embarked Wellington for the purpose of medical examination; found unfit and discharged, 16 September 1914.
    Re-attested Trentham, 12 October 1915; found unfit and discharged, 16 February 1916.
    Re-attested Featherston Camp, 27 June 1916; found unfit and discharged, 2 August 1916.
    Enlisted 13 March 1917; posted to 30th Reinforcement with the rank of Corporal.
    Reverted to the ranks at his own request, 14 April 1917, and posted to B Company, 27th Reinforcement; posted to J Company, 27th Reinforcements, 29 June 1917.
    Embarked Wellington, 16 July 1917; disembarked Liverpool, England, 16 September 1917, and marched in toTidworth and posted to D Company, 5th Reserve Bn, New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
    Posted as a deserter after being absent for a period exceeding 21 days, Brocton, 12 January 1918; marched in under guard, Brocton, 20 February 1918.
    Admitted to Military Hospital, Cannock Chase, 23 February 1918 (appendicitis); admitted to Nasbury Military Hospital, St Albans, 20 April 1918.
    Found unfit for duty and placed on the NZ Roll, 3 May 1918 (mental deficiency).
    Found guilty, 9 August 1918, of being absent without leave from 19 December 1917, until 20 February 1918; forfeits 44 days' pay by Royal Warrant.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Southampton, England, 31 July 1918; transferred to 'Mamara' at Marseilles, France, date unknown.
    Died before discharge, Wellington, 2 March 1919. AWMM

  • Frederick Upam was the brother of my maternal Grandfather .
    I have a family photo of my maternal Grandfather's family showing him, his siblings and his mother , Edith Upham. This photo includes the picture you have of Frederick as an insert so the photo must have been taken after 1919 ,after his death. Frederick was born in Brisbane and lived in Wellington like my maternal Grandfather.
    Our family understands we are not relations of Charles Upham , VC .
