On 5 June 1917 Briggs joined the 1 Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, 2 Company, at Basseville, undertaking training for the attack on Passchendaele. (Church, p.178)

25 August 1918 Briggs was wounded for a second time at the Battle of Bapaume. "A few days before Briggs was wounded there was a limited attack north of the Ancre River in order to gain the general line of the Arras-Albert railway. The 1 Canterbury Battalion were involved in the capture of the Bapaume and the high ground to the east of the town. On 25 August the Battalion assembled in front of the Grevillers and Biefveillers by 4.30am. The objectives had been met by 7 am but at some stage Briggs was severely injured, having received gunshot wounds to his neck and a compact fracture of the spine." (Church, p.179)

He spent a brief period at the 1 Australian General Hospital at Rouen before being transferred to England on the H.S 'Guildford Castle. He died en route. (Church, p.179) AWMM
