  • Francis Whalen was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Whalen, of 10 Omeara Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

    There is an O'Meara Street in Ottawa. The spellings on Nominal Roll and CWGC do not exist in the present day city.

    Embarked Wellington, 26 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp and reverted to Lance Corporal.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 5 September 1917.
    Reverted to Private at own request, 20 September 1917.
    Joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, and posted to 10th Company, 2 November 1917.
    Admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance, 18 April 1918 (scabies); discharged to and rejoined unit, in the field, 4 May 1918.
    Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 27 June 1918 (ulcer, forehead and buttock), and transferred to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station; to 10th General Hospital, Rouen, 30 June 1918; to 74th General Hospital, Trouville, 3 July 1918; to No 4 Convalescent Depot, Havre, 5 July 1918; discharged to Base Depot, Etaples, 11 July 1918; joined NZ Entrenching Bn, 22 July 1918.
    Joined 10th Company, 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, 3 August 1918.
    Killed in action, 24 August 1918.
