  • A letter written by Second Lieutenant White to the children of Awanui School 5 months before he was killed in action at Ypres

    My Dear Children,
Just a few lines while I have a few spare minutes. I have not seen any fighting yet, but maybe right into the fray before the end of this week. Orders came out today for me to proceed forward to the trenches tomorrow. Had it not been for my attack of the mumps I should have been into the firing line early last month.
I have had a most enjoyable time since I left New Zealand. The weather experienced in England was very cold, especially after we had three or four weeks in a tropical climate. Fortunately the cold never troubled me so I rather enjoyed my first experience of snow. The wintry weather lasted a long time this year. The welcome spring days have come at last and a wonderful change has come over the country during the last two weeks.
