  • In September 2017, I travelled to the Pont Du Hem Cemetery in North West France to pay my respects to a my Great Uncle , to sit by his grave, looking at the surrounds of flat land as far as the eye can see. Wondering why was Uncle Bill so far from his homeland and family, fighting a war that didn't make sense. I placed red roses on your grave and also left a poppy and a cross made from New Zealand flax.

For the other New Zealand soldiers in this cemetery, a poppy and a cross made from New Zealand flax was placed on their grave. Some headstones had no name, words written " A New Zealand soldier only known to God". Photographs were taken of each New Zealand headstone for the photographic archive held at the Army Museum at Waiouru.

Far away from his home and his loved ones. Laid to rest in that far land. Never more shall our eyes here behold him. Never more shall we clasp his dear hand

  • Dear Great Uncle Bill- It is at this time of year, April 25, Anzac Day, that I think of you most and then I look into my folder that holds the Hall White family tree. Along with all the photos and stories and memories that all of these would hold for you.I can see you in your piping regalia, piping the family to church on a Sunday. The push bike trips from Wamate to Oamaru for your piping tuition, the music you wrote for the pipes and the dance steps that all us dances have enjoyed over the years. You have left us a wealth of memories in so many ways, that will never leave us.Also the silver mounted set of pipes that you would have been travelling to Scotland to pick up, never to hear you play your music. Hopefully soon, I will be able to come and sit alongside you at your resting place. Thank you, you have left us a legacy of wonderful memories. Your Brother Jack's family- Nancy White

  • The family continues to remember you, Uncle Bill, in your Macgregor tartan with the pipes. We are proud of your selflessness and sacrifice for our country but saddened by your ultimate sacrifice.
