  • Son of Peter Whyte, of Taupiri, New Zealand.

    "Whyte was posted to France and based at the New Zealand training camp at Etaples. He eventually joined the Pioneer Battalion on 25 May in preparation for the successful attack on Messines on 7 June." (Church, p.171)

    He stayed with the Pioneer Battalion, building dugouts, gun pits and shelters and eventually settled in the Ypres area prior to the third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in October 1917. (Church, p.171)

    In July 1918 Whyte became ill with inflammation of the peritoneum (peritonitis). He was transferred to 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst where he arrived on 19 July. He died there two months later. (Church, p.171) AWMM
