  • Son of Wi Kio and Rangiahua Kio, of Te Kuiti, New Zealand.

    Private Wi joined the Maori (Pioneer) Battalion on 14 September 1917 at Bournonville.

    At the beginning of December 1917 Wi fell ill, suffering from debility. His health did not improve and he was transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 11 December. This illness developed into pneumonia, and he died of this disease on 8 February 1918. (Church, p.177)
