  • Obituary
The following letter has reached the Prime Minister from a Maori father whose son fell at the front while serving with the Maori forces at Gallipoli; O Chiefs of the Government of New Zealand and the Maori people, I now reply to your merciful announcement of the death of my son, Ho Wiremu Rori. It is a source of pride and satisfaction ro me to have your assurance of your concern in my loss of my son. Accept now my assurance that I do not begrudge him in this world conflict; it is enough for me to reflect that he has died doing his duty to his country. ln that sense, then, I do not grieve for him, but naturally the pangs of a parent are mine. As it is written: There is a time for sorrow and a time for rejoicing. I thank you for our kind concern, and will add some words of farewell to my departed and beloved son Depart, thou descendant of Rahiri. Farewell, thou descendant of Tupoto, Of Kopuru, of Tama-ki-te-ra, Thou descendant of Heaven above And of Earth beneath, Of Tamatea-uri, of Pareaute, and of Te N Araiti; Thou representative of the warrior tribe of Ngatirangi. Let that suffice as a farewell to my son. From your humble friend, Wlremu Hori. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 23 February 2016 - Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume LXIX, 17 November 1915, Page 4
