  • Son of Arthur Richard Alder and of Lily Maud Alder (nee Duncan) of Opotiki, Bay of Plenty.

    Worked for Shell at the Auckland Installation from 1939. Enlisted in 1941, and joined the anti-aircraft training regiment as a gunner. Posted to G Troop, 43rd Battery, 14th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. After training Lionel sailed for Egypt in April 1941, and was engaged in the Egyptian, Libyan, and Italian campaigns as a gunner.
