This ANZAC Day we remember you Bruce, the Uncle we never met, but never forgot, because your sister, our mum, talked about you all her life and kept your memory alive. Your death broke the hearts of your mum & dad, Doris & Frank Andrews, and profoundly affected your 3 little sister and your little brother and all of their 17 children who never met you but 'knew' you because of the stories we all grew up hearing. You died wearing an ancient poenamu pendant, a family treasure from a close Maori friend from the Waikato. It was given to your dad, Frank Mitchell Andrews, to protect him during his years in France during the First World War. When your turn came to go to war, they passed it to you. Being the first in your big family to see your memorial plaque at Runnymead in England, 68 years after you were shot down over the North Sea, was powerfully impacting. Lest We Forget.
