    The Battle of the Ruhr.It covered the period 5 March to 24 July 1943.The raids included several over Essen, Berlin and Bochum, Kiel, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Mannheim in Germany, and also forays to Czechoslovakia and Italy (La Spezia).Mine laying was also undertaken at sea to protect shipping lanes.These operations included the Bay of Biscay to the south, to the Baltic in the north. Casualty figures were high both in men and aircraft during the Ruhr campaign.Aircraft crews were 'under no illusions as to the magnitude of the task and risks involved'.
