    • Son of Thomas Atkinson and of Hannah Atkinson (nee Gould), of Kendal, Westmorland, England; husband of Eileen Ethel Glorina Atkinson, of Christchurch, Canterbury AWMM
    • Youngest son of a hill farmer, Thomas Atkinson. Brother of Lizzie Mottershead (nee) Atkinson who married George Mottershead. Beloved Uncle of Muriel (Mew) and June Mottershead. This family founded Chester Zoo (BBC drama Our Zoo) in 1930. Regularly sent postcards to his nieces about New Zealand and how much he loved the country after he emigrated there. Before he joined up he had traveled round the country on a motorbike shearing sheep. He was one of the reasons Mew later decided to emigrate to New Zealand and June and her husband Fred spent some time backpacking and working their way around the country in the mid 50s.
