  • Sapper Baff was the son of Robert John Arthur and Isabella Jessie Baff, of Whangarei

He did not tell his parents about his Mentioned in Despatches distinction. It is thought however that he mentioned the actual incident in a letter to his parents. He said that during the Libyan Campaign they had had a hard job of rescuing the crew and soldiers from a troopship that had sunk close to the coast. The troops worked right through the night hauling the men from the vessel up precipitous cliffs by ropes.

Captain Anderson, commanding officer of the specialist unit of the New Zealand Engineers to which Sapper Baff was attached wrote to his parents noting that Sapper Baff distinguished himself in the desert campaign and had been specially commended by General Wavell.

Sapper Baff was overseas with the third echelon and after serving in Libya and Greece he was killed in Crete.

During his service he sent home to his people many interesting souvenirs of the fighting including parts of Italian equipment. AWMM
