    • Frederick Wylie was the son of Joseph Wylie, teacher (Rotorua) and Ellen Elizabeth Wylie.

      He enlisted in New Zealand and embarked with the 4th Contingent

      24 March 1901 Charged and captured 15-pounder Boer gun and killed its two defenders (Ventersdorp).

      He then re-enlisted in South Africa with the rank of Sergeant (7 Contingent, Supplement).

      He is buried at Klippersfontein, near Ermelo, Transvaal

      TROOPER WYLIE'S DASHING EXPLOIT. Further particulars of the engagement at Hartbeestefontein, described in Lieutenant Arthur's letter, state that after Delarey's two thousand had been put to flight, Trooper Wylie, of "D" Squadron, made off to the right by himself after another gun; the- gunners deserted the gun on his approach, and took refuge in a waggon that was trying to make good its escape. But there were still three mounted men between Wylie and the gun, to whom he shouted to halt and surrender, but they took no notice, and made a bolt for it. Seeing this, Wylie slipped off his horse and let drive at them, bringing two to earth shot dead, and the third man, seeing the fate of his companions, wisely pulled up and surrendered his arms. During the whole of this Wylie was under fire from the Boers, who were some distance back. He has been recommended for the Distinguished Service Medal, which he no doubt thoroughly deserves. Trooper Wylie hails from Rotorna, and belongs to the Auckland Squadron of the Fourth Contingent. The total capture amounted to nine guns (two 15-pounders, six Maxims, and one pompom), 160 prisoners, 60 waggons, and 40 Cape carts. The waggons had a tremendous lot of small arms and ammunition on, and the limbers of the guns were also fully stocked with ammunition, and all the guns were drawn by mole teams. All the capture was made by the Fourth New Zealanders and the Sixth Australian Bushmen, although some of Sbackelton's men did splendid work on the flank.
