    • Before World War I, enteric fever, or typhoid fever, was the scourge of armies, and in the Anglo-Boer War killed more soldiers than enemy action. It is caused by a bacteria entering the body via contaminated food or water. Early symptoms include high fever, headaches and lassitude. Follicles along the intestinal walls later become inflamed, often leading to perforation and hemorrhaging. Other complications include gall bladder, pneumonia or heart failure.

      At the time of the Boer War, there were no antibiotic remedies for the disease.

    • BROOME, FREDERICK SAVILLE.—Trooper, Second New Zealand Contingent. At College 1891-93. On leaving College, joined the staff of the A.M.P. Society at Wellington. A well-known athlete and footballer (Oriental Club). Among other performances on the track, won the Old Boys’ 100yds at one of our sports meetings. While on active service in the Orange Free State he had a very narrow escape for his life, as a shell blew bis horse to pieces under him, without doing him any harm. Not very tall, he was yet of splendid physique, but in spite of this the irregularities of the campaign, such us the badness of the food and the water, brought on dysentery and then enteric, with the result that he succumbed to the latter in hospital at Johannesburg, July 23rd.
