    • THE LATE CORPORAL DEVEREUX.
      Aucklanders will deeply regret to see in the list of "killed" in the Reitfontein fight the name of a young Aucklander, Corporal Rodney Devereux ,of the Second Contingent, New Zealand Mounted Infantry. The late Corporal Devereux, who was only 22 years of age. was a son of the Hon. H. de Bohun Devereux, of the Auckland Customs. He was an old St. John's College boy, and was a corporal in the College Rifles. He had been in the employ of Messrs A. Clark and Sons, in Auckland, prior to joining the Second Contingent, His relatives had anticipated his arrival home here about Christmas, as his recent letters had stated that he had fallen behind his contingent through having lost his horse, and that he contemplated leaving for home after serving a time in the military police.

      Yesterday Mr Devereux received the following telegram from the Premier: "Deeply regret to inform you that Governor at Capetown cabled me that No. 435, Corporal Rodney Devereux, was killed in recent action at Reitfontein. You have my sincere heartfelt sympathy, and the consolation, small though it be, that he died a noble death, fighting for the Empire."
