    • Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) AWMM
      DSM. Awarded for mental and physical endurance as a quartermaster of H.M.S. Fiji when it sank off Crete. As action quartermaster in the lower steering position, said his citation, 'he performed his duties without fault throughout the long and trying action which ended with the loss of the ship. Rudder orders were frequent and often drowned by the noise of gunfire and bomb explosions. He made no mistake and remained cheerful, even when the ship listed 25 degrees, lighting was failing and near compartments were being flooded. His performance was one that demanded physical and mental endurance of a high order. His conduct and fine leadership were an inspiration to those around him.' From Waters, S.D. (1956).   • Henry Booth was the son of Percival Booth and of Olive Booth (nee Doube), of Auckland; husband of Marjorie Susannah Booth, of Belmont, Auckland.

    He joined the Royal Navy on 5 December 1924, the day after he turned 15.

    Chief Petty Officer Booth was killed on 28 March 1942, when the Campbelltown, carrying five thousand tons of explosives and several commando troops, rammed the great Normandie dock at St. Nazaire.
