    • Attended King's College 1908 - 1911.

Son of William Nelson Gamble and Rachel Louise Gamble AWMM
    • Douglas was brought up and educated in Auckland, N.Z. He was educated at Remuera School & King's College. On leaving school he entered into the employment of the NZ Insurance Co. where he remained until he left for the front in May 1915. He held the position of sergeant in the senior cadets and on being drafted to the territorials he retained that rank. Although a good all-round sportsman, football was his favourite game and he was a prominent member of the Remuera Football Club.

He served in World War I and was a member of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, Reg. No. 13/2191, with the rank of Warrant Officer, 2nd Class (Sergeant Major). He saw about six weeks service at Gallipoli. Douglas arrived back in Alexandria, Egypt on 27 December 2015, meaning he must have been one of that last group of New Zealanders to be evacuated from Gallipoli. His service then was mostly in the Canal Zone. He was killed on 9 Aug 1916 in one of the early actions which involved N.Z. forces in Palestine at Katia, Aogratina and Bir el Abd between 6 & 12 August 1916. He was buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt, Grave Ref A.66. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission information (2000) states that "in the the Kantara Memorial commemorating 16 NZ mounted soldiers whose graves are not known." His name is inscribed on the memorial gates at Remuera School, Auckland. Public - Donald Barrie - Other relative - 20 January 2018 - Family records, CWGC, NZ War Record.
