Bray & Son, carters, and gradually took over from his father to manage it.On 22 May 1911 at age of 34 he married 24 year old Ada Grace Marks at St Peters Church, Onehunga. The officiating minister was John Haselden. They had four daughters : Phyliss, Lorna, Mary & Grace.In 1926-7 Herb served on both the executive committee Onehunga Manukau Chamber of Commerce and the Onehunga Jubilee Committee. He also belonged to the Orphan's Club and the Ancient Order of the Foresters.Ada and Herb retired to the home they had built overlooking Lake Taupo until Herb's death in 1945. Ada died aged 83 on 17 June 1969.
