Gordon Brewer was the son of William Brewer and of Alice Maud Brewer (nee Sims), of Papatoetoe, Auckland, New Zealand.

During an attack on Dunkirk, the Boston bomber was hit, and he was wounded. He carried on, bombed his target and managed to return to his airfield.
