  • Son of Colonel the Honourable Sir James Allen, KCB (High Commissioner in London for New Zealand) and Lady Allen.

"Son of the Minister for Defence, after a distinguished career at Cambridge, where he achieved the honour of being elected President of the Union, was called to the Bar in England and subsequently given a commission in the Worcester Regiment. He was associated with the small group of men who originated and maintained the 'Round Table,' and returning to New Zealand in 1912, though only 28 years of age, was appointed one of the Dunedin representatives in the General Synod of 1913. He fell in action on Gallipoli leading his platoon when charging the Turkish trenches. During his time at school he showed considerable literary ability, and had he lived he would doubtless have proved his real worth in a very short time. He left at the end of 1904."
