  • Edlin was the son of William Edlin (born in England) and Phoebe Margaret (born at Woodend, Christchurch) and was 25 when he enlisted in 1917. When examined he was found to have a 'weak heart' but was nonetheless accepted for service.

Described as being 5 ft 5 inches tall, with blue eyes and brown hair Thomas Edlin suffered recurring bouts of bronchitis and was hospitalised several times during 1918 whilst on overseas service. He was a dispatch rider.

He returned to New Zealand on the Matatua leaving Britain on 8 January 1919 following his repeated illnesses. On two occasions during his service in Britain he was disciplined for non-performance of duty. For these transgressions he was confined to barracks for four days both times. One of the dates he failed to report for duty was Christmas Day.

He married Margaret Hannah Merry (his first wife) at Wellington Registry Office in 1911. They had two children, William Thomas born 12 April 1911 at Petone, and Phoebe Margaret born 11 August 1912 at Sumner. AWMM
