  • John Laidlaw was the thrid son of Jessie Marion and Robert Laidlaw.

    His brother, Arthur Frederick Banks Laidlaw (35642), was also killed in WW1. A third brother appealed his call up, Robert was criticised by the Truth and he was then exempted on compassionate grounds.

    Educated at King's College for part of 1907, and in Dunedin at High Street School, St Clair School and Otago Boys' High School. He is listed in the King's College Roll of Honour.

    Laidlaw emabrked as a civilian learning to fly at his own expense at the Ruffy-Baumann School in Hendon, England.

    Learnt to fly with the intention of joining the RNAS in March 1916. However was killed in flying accident in a Caudron G2 before enlisting and completing training. Buried Hendon Cemetery London.

    He is listed in the World War I Hall of Memories in the Auckland War Memorial Museum and is listed in the Auckland Provincial Roll of Honour - listed as a member of the RAF. AWMM
