  • Gilpin was born in England. Son of Dr and Mrs Robert Harrison Gilpin

    He attended St John's College during 1912.

    He enlisted with the Wellington Mounted Rifles NZEF on the outbreak of war and sailed with the Main Body. He later served with the RNAS prior to is merger with the RAF.

    Gilpin died in an air accident.

    In Memoriam: GILPIN - Killed on December 22, 1018, result of flying accident, Lieut. Robert Rooke' R.A.F., eldest son of the late Dr. R. Harrison Gilpin and of Mrs. Gilpin, in his 24th year. "He hath awakened from the dream of life." Buried in Louvres Churchyard, on the Seniis Road, near Paris.
