  • Son of Dr. John George Campbell and Violet May Campbell, of Whangarei

Ian Campbell attended King's College (School House) during 1936. He joined the North Auckland Mounted Rifles soon after leaving school and transferred to the Royal Air Force to train as a pilot. He captained a Lancaster bomber in the United Kingdom and was killed in action on a night raid on Munster.

The raid in which Flying Officer Campbell died occurred on the night of 23/24 September 1944. There were 113 aircraft involved: 107 Lancasters, 5 Mosquitoes, and 1 Lightning of 5 Group carried out a supporting raid on local German nightfighter airfield just outside Munster. One Lancaster was lost. Some bombs fell on Munster itself. Town records list 100 high explosive bombs but no fatal casualties.

In 1998 Adriaan de Winter and Ton van Alphen undertook a project in the Reichswald Forest Cemetery photographing all the headstones of New Zealanders buried there.
