  • Raymond Mellsop was the son of Laurence Lionel and Margaret Edith Gilmour Mellsop, Pukekohe, Auckland.

Raymond Mellsop attended King's College (Parnell House) from 1925-1929 where he was a school prefect. He was involved in sport both in school and afterwards. He was shooting champion and gymnasium champion in school and an active member of the Auckland Gliding Club later. He joined with other Old Boys in a community project to establish a church gymnasium for local youths. He worked in the Public Trust Office including branches in Dannevirke, Palmerston North and Nelson.

He trained as a pilot in Canada and joined a transport squadron in India dropping supplies to Wingates armed expeditions into Burma behind the Japanese lines. He and his crew were killed in attempting a night landing on a jungle air strip.

A diary written by his friend Pilot Officer Alan Day (and in the possession of his descendents) makes many references to Mellsop.
