  • Son of John Joseph and Evelyn Jessie Bryce, of Pemberton,

"Here for one year only in 1912, left New Zealand with the 11th Reinforcements in the Wellington Mounted Rifles. Previous to his enlistment he had been a keen Territorial, a duty which he combined with farm work, in which he had proved himself extremely capable. He took a great interest in all outdoor sports, and many will remember him as the winner of the Old Boys’ race in 1915. He was killed in France on September 20th, 1916, just after he had been transferred to a Lewis gun section." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM

  • Obituary
Private Hamish Bryce, Otago Batt., was killed in action on the Somme about September 23rd. He was the eldest sone of J.J. Bryce, Glencorrin," Rangitikei, and was 19 years of age. He was a great rider, attending all the hunts and shows of the Wellington Province, and his cheeriness and good nature made him a welcome visitor in many Rangitikei homes. He was very keen to get to the front, but was delayed for some time on account of his age. Leaving with the Otago Mounteds, he transferred to the infantry in Egypt, and had been in France some three months when he was killed." (Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F., 16 October 1916 p. 77) AWMM
