  • Lieutenant Piggin was the son of Stirtevant and Agnes May Piggin of Papatoetoe, Auckland. Source: Commowealth War Graves Commission.

He was lost at sea when the ship on which he was serving, HMS Punjabi, took action to avoid attack.

The Punjabi was an escorting destroyer protecting the King George V in the North Atlantic. On 1 May 1942 the Punjabi was rammed by the King George V. The King George sank with a heavy loss of life. As it sank the ship was damaged by the Punjabi's depth charges. It is understood that Lieutenant Piggin was knocked overboard by a depth charge. AWMM
