Citation for Bar to Military Medal: "'Libya 1942' During the German attack at Menastir on December 3rd Corporal A. Sperry was acting as despatch rider for his squadron leader. At one stage of the attack he rode forward alone on his motorcycle, under mortar and machnine gun fire and drew a complete and accurate picture of the enemy dispositions. Later Corporal Sperry saw some of our own vehicles driving towards the enemy. Realising the drivers were probably unaware of the proximity of the enemy he rode forward to warn them. To reach the vehicles he had to ride over most difficult boulder strewn country, the last half mile of which was under heavy fire. He succeeded in reaching the vehicles and led them back to safety. Throughout the action Corporal Sperry showed the utmost courage and disregard for his personal safety, and undoubtedly saved a number of our vehicles and personnel from becoming casualties." AWMM

  • Sperry's father Fabian Sperry (13/461) and his uncle Reginald Pountney Sperry (13/2920) both served in World War I. He also had several brothers: David, Lewis and Owen who also served in World War II.

Recorded in the Hamilton Cemeteries database as Allan Sperry

The double decoration of the Military Medal and Bar was among those presented by General Auchinlech at a ceremonial parade of the New Zealand Division.

As one of the only two members of his unit with two decorations, Sergeant Sperry was presented to Winston Churchill when the British Prime Minister visited the Division at El Elamain in August, 1942. AWMM

  • Alan and his brothers were all members of the Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band and Alan was a very good piper. The Divisional Cavalry Regiment appreciated his piping and he decided to take his pipes overseas with him. However, the pipes were a particularly valuable set and so his brother Lewis agreed to look after Alan's pipes in NZ and loan his own set to Alan to take overseas. Unfortunately, during the retreat from the Galatos area of Crete he was forced to leave them behind. He hid them in a cave in the Galatos area but the pipes have never been recovered. After the war and when taking occasional leave of running his soft furnishing business in Hamilton Alan spent what time he could as Pipe Sergeant of the Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band and strongly supported that society. His other main interest was trout fishing and after his death his ashes were scattered over his favourite fishing
