  • Private Dixon enlisted in time for the first echelon but had to wait to leave with the second echelon as he needed dental treatment.

Missing for thirteen months. Worked in the coalmines at Milowitz Camp E535, then acted as an assistant to a Pole, who in civilian life was a ladies' hairdresser.

On the 1,000 mile march from Poland to Regensberg, was liberated by the Americans and given doughnuts by Marlene Dietrich. He was back in England for VE Day (6 May 1945) and New Zealand for VJ Day (16 August 1945).

Milowitz E535, Upper Silesia, Poland, was a work camp attached to Stalag VIIIB Teschen. It was a coal mining camp which was home to about 500 New Zealanders. The famous Tiki Times was published by the prisoners in Camp 535 between 1 August 1944 and January 1945.It was hand printed in pen and ink proving to be a great morale booster with its camp humour, often at the expense of the Germans. It had to be concealed from the Gestapo but otherwise was posted on the wall in the passageway outside Barrack One. The editor, Private Jack Gallichan, carried all 24 editions, and his diary, on the 1100 kilometer March away from the advancing Russians, and so to freedom.Post war they were made into a bound edition.
