  • Flying Officer Taylor was on Course 44 at Ashburton RNZAF Station during September and October 1943 where he trained as a pilot on DH82 Tiger Moth aircraft. On 11 November 1943 he sailed for Canada where he arrived on 26 November. He was posted to H Flight, Course 96, No 3 SFTS, Calgary RCAF Station on pilot training on twin egine Cessna Cranes. He gained his pilots wings and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 5 May 1944. During July and August 1944 he completed a navigation course at No. 1 GRS, Prince Edward Island Station, RCAF and gained his navigators wings. From Canada he went to Brighton, England and was promoted to Flying Officer and posted to 490 Squadron, Royal New Zealand Air Force, based at Freetown, Serria Leone, British West Africa, flying Short Sunderland flying boats for Coastal Command on ten hour patrols over the Atlantic. The Squadron was disbanded at Freetown on 1 August 1945 and the Sunderlands were flown back to the UK.
