    • Avery Dowell was the son of James Avery Dowell and Mararet Gertrude Dowell of Cashmere, Canterbury, New Zealand

      Sub Lieutenant Dowell was listed as missing in the New Zealand Herald on 23 March 1943. Subsequently on 3 September 1943 the Herald listed him as having died.

      Note: Near Sicily on 13 March 1943 the submarine Thunderbolt was sunk by the corvette Cicogna (Italian). Sixty two of her crew died. It is not known if A. Howell was one of these but this details is recorded here for future confirmation. In 1998 Marco Scuderi and Rosario Scuderi undertook a photographic project in the Catania War Cemetery in Sicily. The photos attached to this record are part of the collection they presented to Auckland War Memorial Museum and include the entrance and plaques, cross of sacrifice, views of the cemetery and the headstone of this serviceman.     • Avery Dowell was a rear gunner in the British Fleet Air Arm. He was shot down over the Messina Strait near Sicily. His body was washed up on Stromboli Island.

      Avery was survived by his parents, James and Margaret, and three younger siblings: Margaret (Peg), Noel and Jules.

      Prior to Avery volunteering, he worked for a government department in Hokitika. Public - Julieanne - Other Relative - 3 May 2015 - Margaret (Peg) Porter (his sister) and Anne Dowell (Jules' wife).
