  • In 1943 he enlisted in the Pioneer Corp in England but after a few months was transferred to the Royal Navy. In 1946 he was stationed at a Fleet Air Arm base in Somerset. In 1948 he became a crew member on a frigate that was being transferred to the New Zealand Navy. AWMM
