Harold Morris Fulljames was attested on 27 December 1939 at Paeroa under the name Harold Taylor. On 12 January 1940 Private Harold Taylor (No 21291) entered Papakura Camp and joined 21 Battalion. While undergoing training at Papakura he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 31 January 1940 and to Corporal on 11 March 1940. On 1 May 1940 Corporal Taylor embarked from New Zealand and on 19 June 1940 disembarked at Gourock in Scotland.

During his service with 21 Battalion in Britain, he was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 3 October 1940. He was promoted to Sergeant on 4 January 1941 and on the same day sailed with 21 Battalion from the United Kingdom for Egypt.

21 Battalion arrived in Egypt on 8 March 1941 and soon after, on 26 March, embarked for Greece. On 16 April Sergeant Taylor was admitted to hospital, after being wounded, and it was not until 27 April that he rejoined 21 Battalion. On 18 May 1941 he was reported safe on Crete. Following its evacuation from Crete 21 Battalion arrived in Alexandria on 1 June 1941 and he was then admitted to 2 New Zealand General Hospital. His records do not shed any light on how he was wounded or his subsequent medical problems.

On 29 August 1941 Sergeant Taylor was posted to 2 NZEF's Northern Infantry Training Depot. On 11 October 1941 he was admitted to 1 New Zealand General Hospital. He was discharged from hospital on 25 October 1941 and returned to Northern Infantry Training Depot. On 17 January Sergeant Taylor rejoined 21 Battalion. He remained with 21 Battalion until 21 June 1942 when he was admitted to 46 British General Hospital. Sergeant Taylor was transferred to the New Zealand Convalescent Depot on 30 June 1942 and remained there until 26 June when he was posted to New Zealand Reception Depot. On 7 August 1942 Sergeant Taylor rejoined 21 Battalion. A month later on 7 September Sergeant Taylor was admitted to 6 New Zealand Field Ambulance and then, it seems, transferred to hospital. On 22 October 1942 he was posted to 31 Infantry Training Battalion. He remained with this unit until 17 December 1942 when he was admitted to 23 New Zealand Field Ambulance and then transferred to 1 New Zealand General Hospital. On 23 December he joined 31 Battalion but was again admitted to 23 New Zealand Field Ambulance on 28 January 1943 and then transferred to 1 New Zealand General Hospital. He was posted back to 31 Battalion on 23 February 1943.

Sergeant Taylor was one of the men from the First, Second and Third Echelons selected for leave in New Zealand under the furlough scheme and on 15 June 1943 he embarked from Egypt on HMV 'Nieuw Amsterdam' for New Zealand. He disembarked in Wellington on 12 July 1943 and it appears that he was then admitted to Hanmer Hospital to convalesce. On 9 September 1943 he was discharged from the Army on 13 June 1944 after being found to be medically unfit for further active service.

Harold served under the surname Taylor not Fulljames. He listed the name of Rita, his wife, as Taylor as well. Divorce records list the surname as Fulljames-Taylor.
