The First Echelon of 2 NZEF (354 officers and 6175 other ranks) embarked for the Middle East in Empress of Canada, Strathaird, Orion and Rangitata at Wellington, and in Dunera and Sobieski at Lyttelton.After crossing the Tasman Sea the convoy was joined by the Australian transports Empress of Japan, Orcades, Otranto, Orford, and Strathnaver.The naval escorts comprised: between Wellington and Sydney, HMAS Canberra, HMAS Australia, HMS Ramillies and HMS Leander: Sydney-Fremantle, Canberra, Australia and Ramillies: Fremantle-Colombo, Ramillies, HMS Kent and the French cruiser Suffren: Colombo-Aden-Port Tewfik, Ramillies, HMS Sussex, HMAS Hobart, HMS Westcott and HMS Eagle. The convoy reached Fremantle on 20 January, Colombo on 30 January and Port Tewfik on 12 February.
