    Gerald Matthews was six feet tall, with fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.

    He arrived in Egypt on 4 December 1914.

    He became ill on 22 May 1915 at "Field Ambulance" ANZAC Cove and was taken by Hospital Ship (HS), Dunluce Castle to Mundros. Being medically unfit for further active service he was returned to New Zealand (RTNZ) on HS Willochia 29 September 1915-31 October 1915 AWMM
