    January, 1944

    7 January, 1944 1st party left Maadi

    8 January, 1944 Left camp at 0150 hrs. Tura siding at 0245 hrs. Train broken down. Arrived Tewfik 1450 hrs. Awful trip. Finally aboard the Scythia at 1820 hrs. Packed with Pommies and Pommie Sisters plus Air Force. Have joined up with Keatley's crowd in charge of Detention Cells. Hot as Hell down in stern but most rooms and food good. 12 prisoners, all N.Z. Left Tewfik at 1230hrs. Old tub very slow.

    13 January, 1944 Berthed Aden 1600hrs. Big job. 200 A.Force and 5 Sisters leave us here.

    14 January, 1944 Aden had its second shower of rain in 54 years last night.

    18 Scythia is twin screw; 19450 tons; built 1922, does 14 knots.

    20 Arrived Bombay in morning. Cleared decks for berthing as in Aden. Finally tied up at 1400hrs. Some English troops went off in evening. Scythia carried 5411 passengers and 438 crew.

    21 January, 1944 - Early breakfast at 0600hrs, then dinner at 1100hrs. 1200 hrs went aboard the Mariposa. 1,000 Iti prisoners on board. Pulled out at 1700 hrs. Anchored in stream.

    February 1944 - Melbourne

    5 February 1944 Berthed before 1200hrs. No leave. N.Z. boys for Aussie ashore. The prisoners off first.

    6 February 1944 Left Melbourne at 1415 hrs. Given sheet of instructions and three telegrams to send.

    10 February 1944 Wellington - Berthed at 0830 hrs. Caught the North train at 1340 hrs. Great reception all along the line. Rained a lot of the way. Train was very slow. Arrived in Auckland 0645.

    Married Jean Adkins of Waimate, 16 May 1946. Purchased own dairy farm in Utakura valley, Hokianga in 1948, next to his father's farm. Had one daughter & three sons. Was a member of the Okaihau District School Committee and a Rugby Union Coach for Okaihau Rugby Club.

    Mr Herbert had suffered from Alzheimers for the ten years before he died. AWMM
