    • Sydney Bufton was the son of Son of Mary Jane Bufton, of 267, Barbadoes St., Christchurch, New Zealand. Native of Greymouth, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Sydney Lewis Bufton (or Sydney Lewis Brown) was born in Greymouth. His mother was Mary Margaret Brown. Sydney Lewis Bufton was raised by his grandmother Mary Jane Bufton, formerly Brown, nee Stewart.

He was educated at Marist Brothers School in Greymouth before shifting with his mother and sisters to Christchurch, where they lived at 267 Barbadoes Street. An active iceskater, he received a number of prizes for his fancy dress costumes.

He worked for the Farmers Co-operative prior to enlistment.

According to his niece, when he was killed in action a piece of shrapnel severed his head from his body, which was found several metres away. This fact was relayed to his brother who was also serving, but does not appear in the official correspondence. Public - Wayne - Other relative - 1 March 2016 - Family sources
