  • Charles Gentil produced fake maps of the Desert and left them in abandoned military vehicles for the enemy to find.

"On his return from four years' service overseas, Captain Gentil was appointed to the Draughting Department of the A.A. and until his retirement engaged in drawing new and revising old maps, touring itineraries and other touring information for members' current and post war motoring.

An experienced artist and draughtsman, Captain Gentil went overseas with the First Echelon in January 1940, was commissioned in February 1941, and after serving as a platoon commander in Greece and Crete, transferred to the British Intelligence and served consecutively on the personal staffs of Generals, Cunningham, Ritchie, Auchinleck, and Montgomery. In the Tunisian campaign, Captain Gentil was mentioned in despatches, and he returned to New Zealand with the second furlough draft in 1944."

Served in the British 8th Army (Intelligence Section) AWMM
