  • Three brothers served in WW2 : John Heron (5458); William Heron (14094); James Randel Beckley Heron (7316)

Tractor driver with the Public Works Department Employee at enlistment

Mr Heron served as an infantryman with the New Zealand Cavalry regiment of 2 NZEF.

Mrs M Heron (wife of Mr Heron) writing in March 1999 said he was chosen by ballot with 69 other veterans to attend the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Crete in May 1992. He was the only Crete veteran from South Canterbury who went on the trip. The veterans left by RNZAF 727 on 16 May and returned on 2 June. They were presented with leather holdalls by a representative of the Greek Army. These contained a Bronze Medallion to commemorate 50 years since 1941, along with paper back editions of the Greek period of World War Two and photos of Greece. AWMM
