  • Attended North Linwood Primary School, and Christchurch Boys' High School.

    Became apprentice electrician at Urlwin's Ltd in Christchurch, gaining his qualifications at the Technical College in the evenings.

    In 1936 he went to the UK to further his experience and at weekends he took flying lessons at the Cambridge Aero Club. Joined RAF Volunteer Reserve on 23 July 1938 at the rank of Sergeant.

    Spent 3 months from October 1943 flying Gladiators for the film 'Signed with their Honour', set in Greece in 1941.
