    Educated at Matamata District High School.

    His friend Robert Holder (NZ391356) was killed moments later in another accident during this training

    On Achilles Point, Auckland, overlooking the harbour is a seat which bears the inscription 'Presented to the Citizens of Auckland by Private J.E. (Ted) Scherer in memory of his friend, Sgt. Pilot Douglas O. Stanley of Matamata who lost his life in England 26 October 1940'.
