  • At the time of his death Hamblyn was attached to Bomber Command.

Son of Percy Cartwright and Harriet Hamblyn , husband of Esther Ngaine Hamblyn of Taranaki

In October 1943 Robert and his crew (5 New Zealanders and 2 Englishmen) responded to a request for volunteers to search for a Flying Fortress which had come down in the North Sea the previous day. They left for this mission called Operation Air Sea Rescue in the Lancaster II DS721 KO-U at 0652 from Little Snoring and were lost without trace.

It is thought that they were shot down off Dutch coast with the loss of the entire crew consisting of F/O R.C. Newcomb (RNZAF), Sgt M.J. Jones, F/O. R.A. Nimmo (RNZAF), F/O S.J. Ellis (RNZAF), F/S A.W. Clark (RNZAF), Sgt G.J.P. Boyd and F/S E.C. Hamblyn (RNZAF). AWMM

  • I am your niece, but I never knew you. You must have been terrified sitting in the plane, not knowing if you were going to your death, or whether you would return to live another day. I salute your ability to cope with conditions that were far removed from the farm at Patea.
