  • While I was at Motuihe Island I brought a girlfriend over to see where we trained and as the boat was tied up to the wharf I got my hand jammed between the boat and the jetty and lost two fingers off my left hand."

Home Guard as a signaller. 'Trained with the Home Guard every Saturday. My father was a Corporal in the Home Guard. We met every Saturday and were divided into two teams, the enemy and the allies. We really used to lark about. After I signed up though we went to Motuihe Island and trained for 8 months before going to sea properly. We received 7 shillings a day while we were on Motuihe Island and when we passed at the end of 8 months we were paid 10 shillings a day.

The following comments are quoted from Nurse Thomson-Lindsay's discussion with Mr Miers. 'Ken thinks that all letters of his war experience have been lost, though his sister may have photos of him in his uniform, but he has lost contact with her in recent years and at present is trying to locate her in the South Island somewhere. In general he thinks his war years, when he was so young, were all right. There were about 40 in his naval class, all around the same age, and they all survived. He lost contact with them all though after the war.'
