  • All 3 Gilmore brothers fought in the War. Bob the eldest (21501, 21st Battalion); Les ( 62975, 21st Battalion); and the youngest brother Bill (7309, 27th Machine Gun Battalion).

Les wrote on his Attestation Form that he would have preferred to join a Machine Gun Company (his younger brother Bill (7309) was already serving with the 27th Machine Gun Battalion). Instead he was placed in the 21st Battalion where his elder brother Bob (21501) was serving. By the time he arrived in Maadi, Les would have heard that Bob was missing, believed killed in Greece. Later that same year (between 22 November 1941 and 2 January 1942), Les was wounded and taken Prisoner of War. AWMM
