  • Harold Haeusler was the son of Rudolph Hans Haeusler and Doris Mildred Haeusler of Whangarei.

    While on a search for a missing plane from 179 Squadron, the Whitley that Flying Officer Haeusler was piloting crashed into a hill on the Faroe Islands. It was thought that restricted visibility prevented the crew from seeing the hill in time.

    Flying Officer Haeusler died in hospital of his injuries the following day.

    The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives the 9th as his date of death, although contemporary documents clearly show that Haeusler did not die until the 10th
