    • Attended both Kings School and King's College (1936-38) where he was prominent in the swimming and shooting fields. On leaving school he worked for Jeffeson & Sons, Chemists of Khyber Pass. He joined the RNZAF from Auckland University, trained as a pilot and in the UK became a Wellington bomber captain in No 75 (NZ) Squadron.

      He was killed in an air operation in the attacks in the Ruhr Industrial valley.

    • In 1938, when aged 16 he and some of his friends were playing with some chemicals - trying to ignite home made explosives. When the explosion occurred, Francis received lacerations to his chest, but his friend William Twiston DAVIES aged 15 years 10 months died.
