  • Richard Alington was the son of Richard Geoffrey and Catherine Ruby Alington of Ashburton, Canterbury. He was the husband of Mavis M. Alington.

Sergeant Alington was the captain of a Wellington which was on a ferry flight with four others from England to Egypt via Gibraltar and Malta. He had been serving with 99 Squadron and had been posted from Bomber Command to the Middle East, making his way there by means of the delivery flight. On the Gibraltar-Malta leg, some fifteen minutes prior to their estimated arrival time, a message was received that Sgt Alington's aircraft was under attack about 70 miles out from Malta. Nothing further was heard from them.

Remembered on the Ashburton War Memorial. AWMM
