  • Leslie Smith was the son of Susanna Anne Smith of New Plymouth, Taranaki.

    He was apprenticed as a baker.

    In 1940 he was accepted for training as an air gunner

    Departed for Canada 14 August 1941, for training at the air wireless school, Winnipeg, and at No & Bombing School, Paulson, qualified for air gunners badge, promoted to Sergeant 1942

    Stationed in UK at Bournemouth and West Kirby

    Returned to NZ September 1942, posted to Nausori, Fiji

    Air gunner, Sergeant, Flight Sergeant

    Returned to New Zealand 1943, posted to Guadalcanal and Munda in New Georgia with 1 Squadron

    He was believed killed on 7 December 1943 when a Ventura crashed into the sea in a heavy rain squall near Henderson airfield.
