  • Son of Douglas Hepburn Ayson, and of Florence Mary Ayson (nee Fache), of Gore, Southland

    Formation flying with 2 Operational Training Unit at Ohakea in a P40E Kittyhawk NZ3003. After leaving the formation at 1330 hours, executed a series of diving turns then dived into Otaki beach and burst into flames . It was thought that the apparent loss of control may have followed a leak in the fuel system, resulting in his being overcome by fumes.
